We are pleased to present Anna K.E.'s first solo gallery exhibition on September 9, 2011 at 6 pm, during DC Open 2011.
For her show Gone Tomorrow, the artist developed a kind of miniature sculpture-park in the gallery that shows her group of works that are called Somewhere in the West (since 2007). This group consists of numerous architectural models, created by the artist, models that allude to utopian experiments of the architectural epochs of the last centuries.
In the lower exhibition space, the video installation Without Jewel brings to a conclusion what is approached in a rather fragmental way in the upper exhibition space.
The history of art and architecture is always as well a history of values or, put another way, it always also describes the change of the perception of values at a particular time. Evolutions are also described by the evolution of hierarchies with which one was attempting to understand the basic structures of an era. The ever-changing values always influence also the basic materials for the creation of art. Especially in terms of sculpting each material is associated with a specific connotation. Only the original physical features of the material remains unchanged, but in the context of art, each material contains a proper cultural identity that generates a value, independent of these physical features. Anna K.E applies the alleged cultural readability to her sculptures and installations as a vocabulary, as a treasury of words, that allows her to playfully question our reception of art as well as its related system of values. She is thus playfully using chipboards, beat gold, wood, ceramic, plastic, tar, marble, and numerous sorts of materials for her series of utopian architectural models, that challenge us to leave our conventional observation of history behind and to attempt to understand immediately the structure, the surfaces, the colors and constructions. The questioning of historic values is not restricted to the understanding of materials, but is continued in the questioning of the originality of a specific work. So, the sculptures exhibited focus on models of architectures. Even though these constructions only allude to utopia, their character as references and reproductions is preserved through the fact that they can be classified as architectures. Only the hanging structures that carry the models remain free of that representing function. Thus, the genuine idea of a "work" rather applies to what used to be the base of a sculpture.
Such a reversal of the conventional hierarchies can also be seen in the digital prints Flushing Av. and Jefferson Av. that show the installation of the sculptures in the gallery as if they were collages of computer drawings and photographs of the models: the reproduction of the exhibition turns into a distinct piece of art.
Whereas the exhibition in the upper space of the gallery focuses on the outer conditions of art production, downstairs in her installation Without Jewel Anna K.E prioritizes her inner world. In what appears to be an industrial frame, a dyed fur coat, filled up with a non-visible volume is hanging. From the sleeve of the coat a video loop is projected on the wall, showing the artist having a futile fight with a rubber mattress.
Anna K.E. was born in 1986 in Georgia and graduated in 2010 as a master student at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Prof. Georg Herold and Prof. Christopher Williams.

Wir freuen uns sehr, am 9. September 2011 um 18.00 Uhr im Rahmen der DC Open 2011 die erste Einzelausstellung in einer Galerie von Anna K.E. zu eröffnen.
Für die Ausstellung Gone Tomorrow entwickelte Anna K.E. in den Räumen der Galerie eine Art Miniatur-Skulpturenpark in dem ihre 2007 begonnene Serie Somewhere In The West präsentiert wird. Die Werkgruppe besteht aus zahlreichen von der Künstlerin entwickelten, architektonischen Modellen, die utopische Versuche architektonischer Epochen der letzten Jahrhunderte zeigen.
Im unteren Ausstellungsbereich bringt die Videoinstallation Without Jewel den fragmentalen Ansatz der oberen Räume zu einem konzentrierten Abschluss.
Kunstgeschichte und Architekturgeschichte ist immer auch eine Wertegeschichte oder anders gesagt, sie beschreibt immer auch den Wandel des Wertempfindens einer jeweiligen Zeit. Die Veränderungen werden auch mit der Veränderung von Hierarchien beschrieben, mit denen versucht wurde, die einer Epoche zugrundeliegenden Strukturen zu erfassen. Die sich verschiebenden Werte strahlen immer auch auf die Ausgangsmaterialien der Kunstproduktion ab. Gerade in der Bildhauerei wird mit jedem skulpturalen Rohstoff eine bestimmte Konnotation verbunden. Unverändert bleiben nur die originären physischen Eigenschaften des Materials, doch im Kontext der bildenden Kunst birgt jeder Werkstoff eine im jeweils eigene kulturelle Identität, die einen Wert unabhängig von den physischen Eigenschaften generiert. In ihren Skulpturen und Installationen verwendet Anna K.E. diese vermeintliche kulturelle Lesbarkeit wie ein Vokabular, einen Wortschatz, mit dem sie spielerisch unsere Kunstrezeption und das damit verbundene Wertesystem in Frage stellt. Spielerisch verwendet sie also Pressspanplatten, Blattgold, Holz, Keramik Plastik, Teer, Marmor und unzählige weitere Materialien für ihre Serie von utopischen Architekturmodellen, die uns auffordern unser Geschichte-erkennendes Sehen zurückzulassen und zu versuchen unvermittelt auf die Struktur, die Oberflächen, die Farben und Konstruktionen zu blicken. Die Hinter-
fragung von historischen Werten beschränkt sich aber nicht auf die Materialien, sondern setzt sich in ihrem Umgang mit der Frage nach der Originalität eines Werkes fort. So stehen im Zentrum der gezeigten Skulpturen Modelle von Architekturen. Auch wenn die gezeigten Konstruktionen nur Utopien andeuten, bleibt ihnen aufgrund der erkennbaren architektonischen Einordnung der verweisende oder auch reproduzierende Charakter erhalten. Frei von dieser repräsentierenden Funktion sind nur die hängenden Strukturen, in die die Modelle installiert sind. Der originäre Werkbegriff trifft hier also mehr auf das zu, was in herkömmlichen Präsentationen einmal der Sockel war. Diese Verkehrung überkommener Hirarchien findet sich auch in den Digitaldrucken Flushing Av. und Jefferson Av. wieder, auf denen die Installation der Skulpturen in den Räumen der Galerie im Stile einer Collage aus Computerzeichnungen und Fotografien der Modelle abgebildet wird. Die Reproduktion der Ausstellung wird hier zum eigenständigen Werk.
Während sich die Ausstellung im oberen Bereich der Galerie auf die äußeren Bedingungen der Kunstproduktion konzentriert, rückt Anna K.E. in ihrer Installation Without Jewel, die in den unteren Räumen der Galerie gezeigt wird, ihre Innenwelt in den Vordergrund. In einem industriell anmutenden Gerüst hängt eine gefärbte Felljacke, die von einem unsichtbaren Volumen ausgefüllt wird. Aus einem Ärmel der Jacke wird ein Videoloop auf die Wand projiziert, der die Künstlerin in einem vergeblichen Ringkampf mit einer quadratischen Schaumgummi Matratze zeigt.
Anna K.E. wurde 1986 in Georgien geboren. 2002 wurde sie an der Kunstakademie in Stuttgart zugelassen, von wo sie 2004 an die Akademie nach Düsseldorf wechselte. 2010 beendete sie ihr Studium bei Prof. Georg Herold und Prof. Christopher Williams als Meisterschülerin. In diesem Sommer wurde sie mit ihrer ersten institutionellen Einzelausstellung im Kunstverein Leverkusen gezeigt.
